Dressing for Security

The TSA has released an online site to help you get through security better. Part of preparing for your next travel could be related to airport travel and security. Knowing what to pack and what you need once you arrive is just part of the planning process. However, you can start your trip off correctly if you “dress the part” as TSA calls it on their government site. If you want to make it through security without issues or even missing your flight some of these tips might help. After all, you do not want to get paycheck advances to get a new flight due to issues at the security gate!

Security uses metal detectors. This has not changed; therefore, if you want to make it through security it is best to wear non metal objects. Basically, leave your jewelry in the carryon bag till you have made it through security. Put your belt in the carryon as well. Real metal belt buckles will set off the metal detectors. Empty your pockets, even of non metal materials. TSA has the option of patting you down if they see a bulge in your clothing. This means if you have tissues in your pocket they may ask you to reveal what it is.

All electronics, phones, jackets, shoes, and layers should go through the x-ray machines. This will eliminate any extra security checks. Loose clothing, no matter who you are is something that will gain an extra look. Clothing that is loose can be hiding something underneath.

Any piercings that you have may be another trigger to get you some extra security checks. For example, a belly button ring may trigger the metal detector. You could be asked to remove it and get that extra pat down. The easiest way to get through security is to use common sense. You do not have to go through with tight fitting clothing, but you should eliminate anything like metal that could trigger the security screening.

As you approach the security area have your photo ID, ticket, and make sure the ticket name reflects that of your license to the letter.
